BYD is going to assemble electric automobiles in Nigeria and will enter the market in 2016

BYD will partner with Nigerian local wholesaler R. T. Briscoe to assumable electric cars using
SKD and CKD.
Mid March, BYD and Briscoe signed a memorandum of agreement for Briscoe to be the exclusive
manufacturer and distributor of BYD in Nigeria. Briscoe has already been certified for auto
manufacturing and assembling.
This is also the first auto maker to assemble electric cars in Nigeria.
BYD said that company will assemble 4 door cars subject to the team of technology.
It will take about” 6-9 months” to market the product, estimating the new autos be on
the market in 2016.
At the initial stage, they will use SKD for assembling, and then migrate to CKD assembling
in later stages. BYD has not announced the actual body style, but foreign media mentioned”
electric 4 door car”.
September of 2013, the Nigerian government has increased the import tax of new and used
automobiles from 22% to 70%. At the same time, the government started to implement
policies to attract investment and push local automobile manufacturing.
