The Federal Republic of Nigeria is located in West Africa on latitudes 6 degree 27’ N, Longitude 3
degree 24’ E. It sits on the top of western coastline of the Gulf of Guinea. It borders with the
Republic of Benin in the west, Chad and some of its lakes in the northwest., Cameroon in the east
and south east, Niger in the North, the gulf of Guinea in the Atlantic Ocean in the south.
Nigeria is the most populated African country with a total population of 173 million, about 16%
of all of the African population. It’s also the largest economy in Africa. In 2013, GPD is 509.9 billion
US dollars.
Nigeria is an energy resourceful African country. It is the number one African oil producer and
exporter. At the end of 2014, Nigeria was found to have the 2nd most oil reserves in Africa
and 10th in the world. Its natural gas reserve is the largest in African and 8th in the world.
Among its wide array of 76 mineral resources, 34 of them are worth commercial mining.
The People’s Republic of China and the Federal Republic of Nigeria established formal diplomatic
relationship on Feb. 10th 1971. The diplomacy has been going very smoothly since then.
In 2005, leaders of China and Nigeria reached an agreement regarding a strategic partnership.
In 2009,the two countries started their first strategic discussion.
China and Nigeria also have signed agreements on trade, economy, technology, scientific
partnering and investment protection. Both countries also established Economic & Trade
committees. Nigeria is the 4th largest trading partner in Africa for China, has the 2nd
largest export market and is a leading investment for China. In 2011, the trading volume
between China and Nigeria was 10.788 billion US dollars, among which 9.207 billion US
dollars are exports from China to Nigeria. In 2012, from January through October, the
bilateral trade volume reached 8.681 billion US dollars among which 7.519 billion US dollars
are exports from China. The largest exports from China mainly include electrical machinery,
power equipment and material for construction, imported crude oil and liquid natural gas,
etc… at the end of 2011, Chinese enterprises have signed project contracts in Nigeria for a
total of 3.16 billion US dollars, the 2nd largest in Africa. China has contracted projects for
building and expansion of railways, athletes facilities in Abuja Sports Center, power plants,
computer controlled telephone network in the rural areas, oil field development etc…
China and Nigeria also have signed an agreement t for cultural and higher education exchange
programs. Both the university of Lagos and Nnamdi Azikiwe University have established Confucius
Institutes in Nigeria. In October of 2009, there was the ”Chinese Culture focus in Africa” event
held in Nigeria. In 2010, CCTV has 2 channels (#4 and #9) broadcasting in Nigeria. In March of 2012,
China and Nigeria have agreed to set up cultural centers in each country. In May, Nigerian Cultural
Center opened in Beijing.
Starting in 1993, China has given scholarships to Nigerians every year. During the 2010/11
academic year, China has provided 138 scholarships to Nigerians. Su Zhou University and University
of Lagos have been chosen by The Ministry of Education of the Peoples Republic of China to
become partners in the “Chinese-African university 20+20 partner plan”.
Nigeria has the largest population in Africa. What makes Nigerians proud is that there are over
200 Nigerian professional football players playing in different clubs around the world.
These include European clubs, Middle Eastern countries, Asian countries and American.
Since their first appearance in the 1994 World Cup in America, Nigerian players have been
recognized for their God-given football talent.
The Nigeria national football team, known as the “super Eagles”, has several world class
players on their roster. They won the gold in the 1996 Olympics football game and was
African Champion in 2013.
Nigeria is also famous for its ivory crafts. Carved ivory objects made by local Nigerians are very
popular with tourists. Since tusk is a trade forbidden item, many tourists can only window shop.
Nigeria also provides many wood crafts, stone carved arts and products made from shells.
Because these items are not expensive but well made, they have become great souvenirs
for tourists.
Nigeria has much beautiful scenery for tourism.
